But without the proper commercial cleaning supplies, the task of keeping cleaners, business owners, and the general public safe becomes much more difficult and dangerous. Today, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) put out a follow up in its recent warning of **[hand sanitizers containing methanol](https://www.cmmonline.com/news/fda-warns-of-hazardous-hand-sanitizers)**, a toxic ingredient when absorbed through the skin or digested. The updated warning from the  FDA is that there are hand sanitizers containing **[insufficient levels of alcohol](https://us.cnn.com/2020/08/03/health/fda-hand-sanitizers-list-expands-trnd/index.html#:~:text=%28CNN%29%20The%20US%20Food%20and%20Drug%20Administration%20has,through%20the%20skin%20and%20potentially%20deadly%20if%20ingested.)** to disinfect and protect from pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2. ![commercial hand sanitizers](https://learn.sweptworks.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/Sanitizersm-1024x403-1.jpg?width=1024&height=403&name=Sanitizersm-1024x403-1.jpg) ### As a precaution, the FDA has listed 101 brands of commercial hand sanitizers in its [**latest warning**](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-updates-hand-sanitizers-consumers-should-not-use#products). All the products on the following list fail one or more of the following criteria: - Been tested by the FDA and found to contain methanol - Are labeled to contain methanol - Have been tested and found to have microbial contamination - Are being recalled by the manufacturer or distributor - Are sub-potent, meaning they have less than the required amount of ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or benzalkonium chloride - Are purportedly made at the same facility as products that have been tested by the FDA and found to contain methanol. ![commercial hand sanitizers and commercial cleaners](https://learn.sweptworks.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/Sanitizer2slim-1.jpg?width=699&height=897&name=Sanitizer2slim-1.jpg) ### **[CNN reports](https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/27/health/fda-list-hand-sanitizers-trnd/index.html)**: FDA test results found some hand sanitizers had concerningly low levels of ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or benzalkonium chloride, the active ingredients. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% of ethanol alcohol or other active ingredients.
