Lets start with an open letter to janitors everywhere:
Today is a very important day for the janitorial industry. A day that not only means a lot to over 3 million custodians the world over, but should also be considered a vital day for every cleaning company out there. Its Thank Your Cleaner Day!
What the heck, you say, I’ve never heard of such a holiday. Well, allow us the great pleasure of introducing you to this fine day-worth-marking-in-your-calendar!
Thank Your Cleaner Day was started by the Building Service Contractors of New Zealand (BSCNZ) in 2015 and is now recognized by over 20 countries across the globe. Cleaners, who number well over 3,000,000 (in North America alone), have the highest turnover out of any industry in the world (anywhere between 100-300%), and a large portion of this is due to the obvious factor of it not being the most gratifying job. However, with a little appreciation, positive reinforcement, and celebration, we could do a lot to bring a few more smiles to this industry.
Your cleaners are more important than you realize. Just consider…we show up to our office, school, shopping center, or any number of places each morning, and find it clean and tidy. We often don’t even think about how it got that way, yet there would be all manner of heck to pay if it wasn’t right? But how often do you pay attention, or recognize the work that goes into making it that way?
We ask one thing of you today and one thing only if you don’t own a cleaning company yourself: Learn your cleaner(s) name! Seems like such a small thing to do, but believe us, that little “Morning Hank/Cheryl/Greta/Timmy!” can make all the difference in someone’s day.
If you are the proud owner of a janitorial company, we remind you that retention is one of the biggest pain points of our industry, and perhaps, a little bit more attention toward employee satisfaction could do a lot to help that. “But where do I start?” You say? You can start by checking out Swept’s Guide to Cleaner Retention.
And if you REALLY want to make an impact on the lives of your cleaners in a meaningful way, may we recommend trying the Dream Manager Program, or adopting a similar practice. The difference this could make in each of your cleaner’s lives is, by our account, impressive! And we know this because we use The Dream Manager Program here at Swept for all of our wonderful employees too!
Read and watch more about the impact it can have on your cleaners right here.
